On
average, our clients turn to us for nearly four hires; one client used us for
ten hires. Some of our clients were hit
hard with the economic downturn, and had to lay off some of our hires. However, all of our other hires are still on
the job.
We offer a Performance Evaluation tool created from the
Feedback section our benchmark report.
When a candidate is in the job for 90 days, we recommend that the new
hire be evaluated. About 25% of our 69 placements have completed the Performance
Evaluation.
We have inquired why
clients conduct so few performance evaluations, and the hiring managers have generally
said that the new hires are performing so well that no review seemed necessary.
Recently I phoned a client to ask about
the progress of a hire, identifying the person by name. The client asked “Who?”,
and when I repeated the name he said, “Oh I forgot he was one of your
recommendations. He is doing so well I think of him as always having been here.”
However, we strongly recommend a performance evaluation to enhance good
performance and to have a benchmark to refer to in case the new hire’s
performance ever changes.
We placed a CFO and inquired how he was doing. The hiring
manager said, “Terrific! Two years ago I purchased an accounting program I
thought was very valuable, but I could not get our last CFO to use it. This man
found the program on his own and, mastered it. .” We have placed 10 people for
this company.
Four years ago, we placed a sales manager, Rick Little, for
a retail kitchen remodeling company.
Ownership wanted a true sales manager who did not need to be industry
savvy. We sent him a candidate and the
client phoned me saying, “He looks like a good sales manager, but he has no
kitchen experience." I reminded him
of his original request, and he relented, and the hire was complete.
The home remodeling industry was devastated in 2009. Last September,
we received a request to profile a sales candidate. We receive a second request in October. I asked Rick why he needed more salespeople. It turned out that he had contacted a big box
chain with a concept he created. They accepted it, and the result is that sales
are growing again. In February 2010, Rick
requested that we profile a third sales person.
Rick’s deal has kept the company in business, and their business is now growing beyond their expectations. This passionate sales manager has the
personal talents for the position – personal talents the company’s president
needed to grow his company. Rick’s testimony about his interviewing experience
for this position is on our website.
