Interviewing and Have Fun AT It

I know some managers wish the job of interviewing candidates and candidate selection would go away.
i like interviewing especially when I am holding all the cards. The only interviewing I do is behavioral. That is interviewing candidates who have completed an assessment of some kind like, behaviors, values, attributes, .etc.
When you have this information in hand you are in a wonderful position to ask questions about them and how they function under pressure and wait to give them time to answer. Once you have received an answer now to can begin to dirll down to get more accurate information. It is said in sales that when you ask the need question the first response will be shalllow, asking it a different way the second time will get you closer to the real need but asking it a third time gets you to the real need if the prospect is a real prospect. People who are not real prospects reject drill down questions.
I find the same thing happens in interviewing candidates. The need question during an interview is "Why are you applying for this positions?" The first person to speak will lose control of the interview. The Art of Interviewing is here.
The question however, is why spend so much time up front in the interview. A friend of mine tells her clients that if do it up from you will not need to spend the time at the end of terminating the person and beginnig the hiring process all over again.
Have fun, ask questions and wait for the response - then drill deeper.
